Deer River Area Health Care Foundation Announces Plans for Community Wellness Center
Deer River, MN April 16, 2018
The Deer River Area Health Care Foundation recently unveiled plans for a new Community Wellness Center at its annual Gala on March 24, 2018.
The proposed 40,000 square foot Community Wellness Center is planned to be located adjacent to the Deer River High School. The design includes community gathering space, a fitness center, gymnasium and multipurpose space, kitchen, community classrooms, space for City and Tribal offices, Board Room, Food Shelf, clinic and telehealth outreach space and drop in child care.
The project is a response to community needs and input through a comprehensive Community Health Needs Assessment conducted in 2016 by Essentia Health in partnership with the Deer River Area Health Care Foundation and Get Fit Itasca. Following the results of the assessment, a Visioning Team was formed in early 2017 to explore the possibility of a Community Wellness Center. The Visioning Team is made up of representatives from the Deer River Area Health Care Foundation, ISD 317, Essentia Health, City of Deer River, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Get Fit Itasca, Itasca County Family YMCA, Deer River Area Food Shelf, North Central Second Harvest Food Bank, the business community, and community members.
The goals of this project are to: offer resources for area residents as a response to growing needs by providing access to comprehensive health and wellness resources; increase access to City, Tribal and community offices; and to create a gathering place and hub for the Deer River area.
The Deer River Area Health Care Foundation has helped to facilitate the project, and has provided funding for the planning process through fundraising and grants.
“Healthy communities are made of healthy people, and we’re excited about the opportunity to create the Wellness Center as a resource and asset to the Deer River area. The vision of the team is to create a healthier, more vibrant community, and the Wellness Center is a great way to help make that happen” shares Leah Oslin, Foundation Director.
