The Deer River Sportsman's Club offers initial firearm training and other gun safty classes along with the permit to carry course. All gun safety classes and other related courses are taught by trained professionals along with volunteers and club members from the Itasca County area.

A 'Permit to Carry' class is usually held in March. More info & signup is available at Jurvelin Hardware. See Mark or Steve 246-8628.

The Deer River Sportsmen Club has a Free Youth Activity Day every spring and a wild game feed at the Vet's Club and is a co-sponsor of the Big Buck Contest durring the Minnesota firearm deer season.

During the annual Deer River Wild Rice Festival in July the Sportsmen Club has a turtle feed at our local Vets Club.

The Sportsman's Club will have their skeet range open on Wednesdays starting in July and running thru August. The hours are 6pm to dusk.

Big Buck tickets, a joint effort of the Vet's Club and the Sportsman's Club, go on sale in September. We also have a 40 acre shooting range north of Deer River that is maintained by the club members. We have rifle site in days out at the range one week prior to the Minnesota firearm deer season.

We do maintenance work at two Minnesota DNR public water accesses. We sponsor a youth day at the range and offer high school gun safety and shooting classes. We have an annnual wild game feed. We also offer one college scholarship each year.

The Deer River Sportsmen Club is a member of the NRA. We keep up to date on legislation issues regarding federal and state forestry, lakes, hunting, fishing and shooting sports.

There are monthly meetings held the first Monday of each month.
