Over the years there have been various types of competions. The baseball and softball tournaments seem to date back to the Festival's very beginnings. The Wild Rice run began in 1980 and is a yearly feature. In 2002 the alumni had a football game, one year the Deer River Archery Club sponsored a canoe-bow race and horseshoe tournaments. The firemen have had "water fights". Several times area men have been required to grow beards with prizes then being given for the bushiest, shaggiest, etc. A medallion hunt began in 1980 and is a yearly event.
